Obituary

Vicki L. Barrett, 68, of Wichita, Kansas, graduated from earth on Sunday, March 24, 2024, after courageously battling a long illness.

On June 18, 1955, in Augsburg, Germany, Vicki was welcomed into the world by her parents, Bill and Polly Bearden. The Bearden family would later return to the United States, making their home on a farm near Altoona, Kansas. Vicki attended Altoona Public Schools, graduating from Altoona-Midway in 1973.

On August 25, 1975, Vicki was married to Richard Johnson. While the couple would later divorce, they remained actively involved in raising their children, and later, a united presence in the lives of their grandchildren.

Vicki later married Daniel Barrett, on August 18, 1988. The couple recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary, and Daniel remained close by as a loving and devoted caretaker throughout her illness.

Vicki's greatest passions in life were her faith and her family. When physically able to do so, she was involved in her church, teaching Sunday school and working many summers in various vacation bible programs; Vicki loved children and they loved her. She also cherished every opportunity for her huge, extended family to gather and would spend days in the kitchen preparing.

Those who knew her will remember Vicki for her warmth, her kindness, her generous spirit, and her profound faith, even in difficult times. Her loved ones knew that Vicki—affectionally referred to as Vic, Granny, and Aunt Vic—would always make both time and space for them. Her door was always open, her phone was always on, and even from her wheelchair, Vicki would prepare special meals for anyone stopping by.

Upon her heavenly arrival, Vicki was reunited with her parents (Bill and Polly Bearden), her older brother (Osie Bearden), her sweet nephew (Aaron Nalley), and her ornery son-in-law (Mike Holland). The sweetest of reunions, though, was with her son, Chris Johnson.

Vicki is sorely missed, but her loving memory will be carried forward by her survivors: husband, Daniel Barrett; daughter, Angela Holland; grandchildren, Dakota, Kaitlin, and Karsin Holland; brother, Paul (Debbie) Bearden; sisters, Julie (Ron) Quanstrom, and Jeanne (Floyd) Wasson; sister-in-law, Jolene Bearden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place, and a private celebration of Vicki's life will occur at a later date. The family suggests that any memorial contributions in Vicki's honor be sent to assist her great niece, Grace Millis, in her mission to share Jesus' love with the people of Nicaragua. Contributions can be mailed to 1191 SW Oakley Ave, Unit B, Topeka Kansas, 66604, or by contacting the family.
