Velene Leona
Brown
Jul 4, 1952 — Apr 6, 2024
Potwin
Velene Leona Brown, 71, of Potwin, KS passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on April 6, 2024.
Velene was born on July 4, 1952 to Jack and Velma Barber in Alameda, CA. She wasn't always happy that her birthday was on Independence Day, but later in life she was appreciative that the neighborhoods always put on beautiful fireworks displays "for her". She is survived by the love of her life and husband of 24 years, Wilton Brown; son, Michael Skidmore (Michelle); stepsons, Jeremiah Brown (Karen) and Zach Brown; siblings, Karl Barber (Brenda), Kate Warren (Jim) and Dan Barber; niece and nephew, Shelby and Jack Barber; many other relatives, countless lifelong friends and colleagues as well as her beloved Cowboy Reunion Posse. She was preceded in death by her parents Jack and Velma Barber.
Velene was a devout Christian, a loving and loyal wife, mother, sibling and friend who never missed the opportunity to speak the truth. She had an unwavering authenticity and was never afraid to be herself (an attribute she passed on to her son). Her over the top personality helped her succeed in her many careers, including radio advertising and apartment management. She never knew a stranger! After 5 minutes of talking with her she made you feel like family. Her ability to add humor to any situation will be deeply missed by all as well as her fun and loving spirit.
Over the years, Velene often mentioned one request upon her passing that her favorite poem about life be shared with everyone. Here you go…….
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO, WHAT A RIDE!"
A celebration of her amazing, faith filled life will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Potwin Christian Church, 224 Violet Ave., Potwin, KS 67123. A luncheon for family and friends will take place immediately following the service. Private burial at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Potwin Christian Church, 224 Violet Ave., Potwin, KS 67123 The family asks that you honor Velene with a kind word or gesture shown to a stranger and that you go out and do something fun in her memory.
