Shirley Jean Southerland, 65, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family and the compassionate care of hospice at her home.

Born on December 01, 1958, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Shirley was the daughter of John Thomas and Leatta (Lee) Bottoms. She attended Tilghman High School in Paducah, KY, graduating in 1976. Following her education, Shirley pursued various roles, including working as a dedicated waitress before becoming a full-time homemaker. Her spirit touched the lives of all who knew her, earning her the titles of a loving wife and mother, caring sister, and cherished aunt.

On May 22, 1998, Shirley exchanged vows with her husband Terry Lynn Southerland Sr. in Wichita, Kansas. They had four sons together: Terry Lynn Southerland Jr., Matthew Dean Florence, Ron Arron Southerland, and John Christopher Southerland. Shirley's deep love for her boys was evident in every moment they shared together and whenever she talked about them.

Although John Christopher preceded her in death, Shirley's love for him continued to shine brightly. She also leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience, reunited in eternal peace with her brothers John G., Terry, Daniel, and Donald Bottoms, along with her sister, Shareena McKinney.

Shirley's memory will forever be treasured by her brother Earl (Martha) Bottoms, sisters Julie (Ronald) Arnold, Leanna (Andy) Bounsana, and Janet (Mike) Cook, as well as her sister-in-law and dear friend Linda (Terry) Bottoms. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and several great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

A celebration of Shirley's life will be held at Westview Baptist Church, 1325 South Meridian Ave Wichita, KS 67213, at 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 16, 2024, followed by burial at Greenwood Cemetery, 6231 W. 47th St. South, Wichita, Kansas 67215. After the burial, there will be a dinner at Westview Baptist Church.   In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials and donations be directed toward Westview Baptist Church to assist in covering the costs of all services.
