Ruby Kay Woodruff (née Shafer), born July 14, 1954, in Wichita, Kansas, passed away in the same city she proudly called home her entire life. She left this world surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering love, deep compassion, and steadfast faith. Though Ruby was her given name, she was known to all simply as Kay — a loving and feisty presence whose strength lifted others through their hardest times.

On February 28, 1976, Kay married the love of her life, William "Bill" C. Woodruff, and together they built a home filled with devotion, humor, and encouragement. She was a fiercely loving mother to her son, William "Justin" Woodruff, and welcomed her daughter-in-law Cortney Woodruff as one of her own.

Kay spent many decades as a scheduling nurse for two orthopedic doctors, bringing patience, empathy, and kindness to every patient who crossed her path. Caring for others wasn't only her profession — it was her calling. Her compassion extended to everyone, whether a lifelong friend or a stranger who needed a smile.

She and Bill also opened their home to many over the years — nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who needed a place to stay. Some came for convenience, seeking a shorter commute to school or work. Others arrived during difficult seasons, needing stability, warmth, and support. While the room they offered was clean and comfortable, it was the love within those walls — the encouragement, the listening ears, the steadfast presence of Kay and Bill — that made their home a refuge. Many found strength there, shaped in part by Kay's gentle wisdom and unwavering generosity.

She was passionate about horses, creating crafts with her friends while sharing laughter and a bottle of wine, and cheering on KU Basketball every chance she got.

Most of all, Kay was a lifelong follower of Jesus Christ. She continually pointed others toward Him — through Scripture, through prayer, and through the example of a life led by grace. Whether raising her son with diligent and loving discipline or walking alongside friends during their personal storms, she was quick to share the hope and peace she found in her faith. She truly lived by the Spirit, allowing God to use her to encourage, comfort, and minister to others.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Betty and Willard Shafer, and her sister and brother-in-law, Debra and Michael Furlow.

She is survived by her husband Bill Woodruff; her son and daughter-in-law Justin and Cortney Woodruff; her sisters Cindy Struble and Donna Stang; her brother and sister-in-law W.L. and Kerri Shafer; and her beloved nieces and nephews: Nick Struble (Erin), Nathan Struble (Katie), Jeremy Struble (Tracy), Damien Furlow, Denesa O'Hanlon (Andy), Jennifer Stang, Christopher Stang (Ale), Alex Shafer, and Logan Shafer.

A celebration of Kay's life will be held on Saturday, December 20th at 10:30 a.m. at Central Christian Church.

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance, gratitude, and worship as her life and faith are honored.

Kay's strength, gentleness, and joyful presence will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her.
