Peggy Ann Smetak

Peggy Ann Godwin Smetak, age 90, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2026, in Wichita, Kansas.

Peggy was born on August 10, 1936, in Dallas, Texas, to Arthur Edwin and Delpha Orilla Godwin. She grew up with her sister, Martha, and spent her childhood in several Texas communities, including Sulphur Springs and Dallas. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas.

In 1956, Peggy married James Frank Smetak. During their 60 years of marriage, they raised three sons, James Christopher “Chris”, Stephen Arthur and Phillip Jason. Peggy was a homemaker who devoted much of her life to raising her family and creating a home for them as they lived in Harrison, Arkansas; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Olathe, Kansas. She especially enjoyed the camping trips they took together as a family.

In later years, Peggy and James cherished their roles as Gammy and Poppy to their granddaughters. Peggy deeply loved Sydney and Summer, and both held a special place in her heart. She shared a meaningful connection with Sydney, who share the same middle name and birthday.

After retirement, Peggy and James moved to West, Texas, where they were surrounded by extended family. Peggy treasured those family connections and especially enjoyed the time she was able to spend with relatives in West.

Peggy’s Catholic faith was an important and enduring part of her life. She was an avid reader and a lifelong animal lover who especially loved having pets as part of her family.

She is survived by her sons, Chris and his wife, Laura; Stephen; and Phillip and his wife, Kelley; and her granddaughters, Sydney and Summer.

Peggy has been reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, James, and her parents, Arthur and Delpha.

Peggy’s family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Morningstar Memory Care for the excellent care, kindness and compassion they provided during her years in Wichita.

Peggy will be remembered for her devotion to her family and the many things that brought her joy throughout her life. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family and all who knew her.
