Peggy Lou Cook, 88, of Maize, Kansas, went to be with our Lord on November 21, 2023. She was born on April 29, 1935, in lantha, Missouri, to Burson and Amy Phillips Fast. Peggy was preceded in death by her father, mother, husband of 38 years, Richard Cook, her loving son Randy Cook, and six brothers.

Peggy is survived by her daughter Marilyn Joyce Slack, eight grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, four sister-in-laws, and numerous nieces, nephews, and life-long friends.

Peggy attended high school in Mindenmines, Missouri, and later embarked on a successful entrepreneurial journey alongside her husband Richard. In the late 1950s, they established their first small business, Cooks Market, in Wichita. Located behind a gas station at 61st N and Broadway, Cooks Market provided the community with fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, bread, and other essential items before the era of convenience stores.

In 1970, Peggy and Richard built their homestead on seven acres, dedicating their lives to growing fresh seasonal produce. Richard would frequently travel to South Texas to procure truckloads of watermelon, cantaloupe, and other fresh vegetables. Their children and grandchildren learned the value of hard work and entrepreneurship, spending summers unloading trucks and tending the garden. Peggy and Richard became regulars at the Downtown Farm and Art Market in Wichita, with the highlight of their year being the Great Pumpkin Patch. Peggy became affectionately known as the "Pumpkin Lady" by many.

Peggy's passion for Christmas was evident as she designed beautiful baskets filled with fresh apples, oranges, grapefruit, mixed nuts, jellies, and other treasures to sell in her little store in the barn. Even into her 70's Peggy continued to work, finding joy in welcoming customers, friends and family who came to visit. Her kind heart and unwavering love for all those who crossed her path will always be remembered. Peggy was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.

A graveside service to honor Peggy's life will be held at a future date. Baker Funeral Home in Wichita, KS, is assisting the family with arrangements.
