Mary Joan Smith

Mary Jo Smith, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, author, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2026.

Born to Harriette Tierney and William “Bill” Tierney, Mary Jo grew up alongside her brother, Timothy “Tim” Tierney. She lived a remarkable life defined by creativity, passion, and an unwavering love for her family.

Mary Jo shared 24 wonderful years of marriage with her husband, Wells Smith. Together, they cherished time spent at their beloved cabin in Montana, creating countless treasured memories with family and friends.

A gifted writer, poet, and thespian, Mary Jo authored two novels, several children’s books, and numerous poems. She was known for her sharp wit, vibrant personality, and spirited nature. Those who knew her will remember her as passionate, independent, and never afraid to speak her mind.

She is survived by her children, Libby Spiers (Scott), John “JT” Theile (Colette), and Allison Tetrick (Mike); her additional children, Merry January (Bill), Sandy Elliott, and Curt Smith; her grandchildren, Jackson Williams, Kassy Theile, Alex Theile, Nick Smith, Claire Boeshaar, Jacob January, Sarah Hunt, Katie Heinen, Nelly Elliott, Thomas Elliott, and Mary Jane Elliott; and many beloved great-grandchildren, including her namesake, Gracie Jo.

Mary Jo loved games of every kind and treasured the laughter, connection, and friendly competition they brought to family gatherings. Her warmth, creativity, strength, and sense of humor touched countless lives.

She leaves behind a lasting legacy of love, storytelling, and cherished memories that will live on through her family for generations to come. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
