Mary Kathleen McKenney

Mary Kathleen McKenney, 88, of Bel Aire, Kansas, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2026.

She was born on July 10, 1938, in Lebanon, Oregon. Her experiences growing up among the mountains and trees of Oregon fostered a lifelong appreciation for the beauty of the natural world. She later developed a deep love for the prairie landscape that would become one of her greatest joys after moving to Kansas with her husband, James, and their growing family.

An educator at heart, she earned her degree in Education from Marylhurst University and later completed her master's degree at Friends University. She believed in the power of learning and encouraged others to approach life with an open mind and a sense of wonder.

Music was one of Mary's lifelong passions. A gifted flutist, she found joy in performing and sharing music with others and was a longtime member of the Church of the Magdalen Choir.

Nature was equally dear to her heart. She loved wildflowers, migratory birds, and spending time on the Kansas prairie, which she considered her second home. Whether admiring a field of native grasses, watching birds pass through on their seasonal journeys, or simply pausing to appreciate a beautiful view, Mary inspired those around her to find beauty wherever they were.

Mary also enjoyed cheering on the Wichita State Shockers and was a devoted fan of Wichita State basketball. Whether watching a game from home or discussing the team's latest season, she took great pride in supporting her hometown team.

More than anything, Mary cherished her family. Known simply and lovingly as "Nanny" to her grandchildren, she delighted in their lives and took great joy in celebrating their accomplishments, milestones, and everyday moments. Her wisdom, encouragement, and unwavering love left a lasting impression on her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter.

Mary was also known for her sharp wit, dry humor, and ability to find laughter in everyday life. Whether through a perfectly timed comment or a playful observation, she brought smiles to family, friends, and all who knew her.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, James McKenney; her parents, Robert and Anna Mealey; her brother, William Mealey; and her sister, Connie McCaffrey.

She is survived by her children, Jamie, Alison (Mitch), Sean (Kristie), and Colin (Brenda); her grandchildren, Christopher, Maeley, Bailey, Mariah, Megan (Taylor), Braeden, and Kaleigh; her great-granddaughter, Emi; her brother, Stephen (Marty) Mealey; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Mary's legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched as a teacher, musician, mother, grandmother, and friend. Whether through a lesson taught, a piece of music shared, or a walk across the prairie, she inspired others to look more closely at the world around them. She never missed an opportunity to point out a wildflower in bloom or a bird overhead, believing that nature's beauty was meant to be shared.

Her family finds comfort in knowing that every prairie breeze, birdsong, and field of wildflowers carries a reminder of the joy and wonder she brought to so many lives.

Service arrangements are pending and will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dyck Arboretum of the Plains in honor of Mary's lifelong love of nature, wildflowers, and the Kansas prairie.

Mary will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
