Lila "Sue" Gilliland, 87, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2025, in Wichita, Kansas.

Sue was born on March 4, 1938 in Glencoe, OK to Paul Hesser and Irene Mae Silver. Growing up as a preacher's daughter, Sue carried with her an enduring sense of compassion, gentleness and service to others.

Sue was married for 63 years to the love of her life, Larry Gilliland, who preceded her in death. Together, they built a life centered around family, faith and unwavering devotion to one another. A dedicated caregiver by nature and profession, Sue's greatest joy came from helping others—whether it was through her work, her church community, or simply being there for a friend in need.

Sue was a proud and loving mother to her children: Jeff (Jackie) Gilliland, Julie Fiedler, Kevin Gilliland and her late son-in-law Brian Fiedler. Her nurturing spirit extended to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with whom she shared countless moments of laughter and encouragement. She is also survived by her sister, Vera Lu Hesser Pollard, and was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Dan Hesser and Don Hesser and her sister, J'Nan Swinney.

Sue had a true gift for cultivating connection. She not only maintained close ties with her family, but also nurtured friendships that became like family. She was funny, endlessly curious, always learning and genuinely kind hearted. Her home was her haven and she took great pride in caring for it, and for her husband.

All who knew Sue will remember her as a devoted wife, a protective and proud mama bear and a woman whose life was shaped by faith, love and generosity of spirit. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion and strength, and a family who is deeply grateful for the way she loved them—and the way she allowed herself to be loved and cared for in return.
