Larry Wiley Osterhout
December 10, 1952 – January 18, 2026

Larry Wiley Osterhout, 73, of Wichita, Kansas, was called home to his Heavenly Father on January 18, 2026, at Wesley Medical Center, surrounded by the family and friends he loved so dearly.

Born on December 10, 1952, in Vermillion, South Dakota, to Don and Hazel Osterhout, Larry moved to Wichita as a child. He attended Heights High School and went on to pursue his calling in public service by studying Fire Science. Larry dedicated much of his professional life to the safety of others, serving first as a firefighter in Hutchinson, Kansas, and later spending 18 years with the Wichita Fire Department. He concluded his distinguished career as the Chief Fire Inspector for the City of Wichita.

Beyond his career, Larry was a man of many passions. He was a gifted drummer with a lifelong love of music, most notably performing with the band Jimmy Legg for several years. Whether he was behind his drum kit, restoring vintage cars and riding motorcycles, or exploring the quiet majesty of the mountains, Larry enjoyed the world around him. He was also a devoted animal lover and had a keen interest in history, news, and classic Western films.

Most recently Larry and his wife Janie have been active members of the Wichita Blues Society, and you could find them jamming at the events and supporting the local music scene.

Larry often said that the best years of his life were when he was raising his children; a testament to the deep love and devotion he had for his family. He will be remembered most for his kind spirit and his willingness to help those in need.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Hazel Osterhout, and his son, Tony Osterhout.

His memory will be cherished by his loving wife, Janie Osterhout; his brother, Michael Osterhout (Mary Jo); and his sister, Donna Carlberg (Gregg). Beloved memories will also be carried by his former wife and the mother of his children, Linda Peckman (Paul); his children, Graham Osterhout and Laura Vallier (Ben); and his three granddaughters, Madison, Elena, and Haley Vallier. Larry's extended family includes Janie's children, Shawna Steadman (Brandon) and Emily Stewart (Michael); her late son Josh Gleason;  and her grandchildren, Gannon and McKenna Steadman, and Cohen and Brody Stewart. He is also survived by Jesse Major, who found a father's love and guidance in him.

A Celebration of Life for Larry will be held on February 8th at the Odd Fellow Hall in Wichita, KS. Join us from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM to honor his memory.

The service will begin at 1:30 PM, followed by snacks and a time for fellowship.
