With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of Joseph Orville Smith, 43, of Wichita, KS. He passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis, surrounded by his closest family and friends. Joe was born Sept. 16, 1980, at St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita, KS, the son of Mark Smith and Jerri Kay (Powers-Smith) Gean.

Joe spent many years in Boy Scouts of America, earning Scouting's highest rank, Eagle Scout. He received the Mic-O-Say rank of Tom Tom Beater Mountain Path. As an adult he guided his son, Mark, and nephew, Trenton Montgomery, to Eagle Scout. He was working with his niece, Madelin "Mad" Montgomery, to acquire her Eagle Scout award. He mentored many youths to achieve merit badges and ranks, and joined them on campouts and adventures. Joe was very generous with his time.

Joe had multiple hobbies that included helping anyone who asked, including with car repair, wood working and video games.

Joe graduated from Wichita Heights High School in 1999. He graduated from Wichita Technical Institute (WTI). When he started his career at Flight Safety, he called it the best job ever, claiming he was playing with million-dollar video games. Joe became the go-to guy at work.

Joe met Krystal Dawn Woods when he was 11 and she was 12, as he always said. They were married April 4, 2004. They celebrated their 20th anniversary this year. They added their son, Mark Daniel Smith, to their family in 2004.

Joe is preceded in death by his brother, Daniel Roy Smith; grandmothers, Bettieann "Nanann" Smith, Freda Jean Powers, Earline Woods; and grandfather, Leland Shields.

Survivors include, his "wif" Krystal; son, Mark; mother, Jerri Kay (Thomas) Gean; father, Mark (Christine) Smith;  mother-in-law, Janie (Don) Harder; father-in-law, Marty Woods; sister, Jeannie (Ryan) Montgomery; best friend Jeff (Leilah) Arnn, brothers-in-law, Jeremy (Lesli) Woods and Jim (Meghan) Harder; nephew, Trenton Montgomery; nieces, Madelin Montgomery, Mickala (Jesse) Romeo, Kylie (Othel) Traylor; grandfathers, Roy Powers and Matthew Woods; grandmother Dorothy Shields. Joe has countless other family members and friends that will miss him dearly.

Funeral will be on Saturday, July 13th, 2024, at 5 p.m. at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, 1600 W 27th St N, Wichita, KS 67204.
