John David Havens, 87, of Newton, KS, departed to be face-to-face with his Lord on Wednesday evening, February 25, 2026, at Kansas Christian Home surrounded by family. John was born November 2, 1938 in Sedalia, Missouri. John graduated from Henderson Public School in 1956. John enlisted in the United States Navy at 17 and served a 4 year term on the U.S.S. Oriskany and the U.S.S. Kearsarge as Aviation Ordnance man Armorer loading heavy artillery. After his honorary discharge he drove semi-trucks in 48 states, mostly self-employed, for household moving companies, graineries and flatbed trailers. John retired from Mercer Transportation as an owner operator, after 20+ years, with a perfect driving record, carrying many unique loads.
John is survived by loving step-daughter Joan and husband Jim Parnell; and nieces/nephews, Charles, Philip, Harold, Rebecca, David, Esther, Ruby, Rachel, and John. John was predeceased by his loving wife of 32 years, Kathleen Capps Havens; parents, Charles Havens and Lydia Gothridge Havens; and siblings Austin, Edna, Evelyn and Polly Ann.
A Memorial celebration will be a close family affair held April 11th, Saturday, at Jim and Joan Parnell's residence. Contributions may be made in John's name to Good Shepherd Hospice, 301 N. Main, Suite 300, Newton, KS 67114.
Baker Funeral Home of Wichita KS to provide cremation services. John wished for his ashes to be spread in his daughter's rose garden with his wife.
