Denise Marie Howard, 60, of Benton, KS has suddenly passed away in the early hours of April 15th at the hospital in Wichita, KS. Few knew she was fighting an illness, that eventually claimed her life. She was the youngest of 4 children, born December 31st of 1965 in Mankato, KS, to Forest and Wanda (McCune) Howard.

Denise graduated from the White Rock Eagles in 1984. She found her career to be in the kitchen, cooking, where her passion grew. Her first job was at the Red Rooster restaurant in Mankato, KS. Next she moved downstate to Kanopolis, KS where she found Tonys Pizza. They employed Denise as she lived her young adult life discovering new hobbies like playing bingo, fishing, and a fun trip to a blackjack table. Responsibly of course.

She Married Jeff Gunn in 1992 and to this marriage they had one child, Cori Gunn. Later on Denise and Cori moved back to Burr Oak where Denise then started a long term career at the Jewell County Hospital, where she was a cook for over 10 years. During this time she was Married to Bruce Stafford (Clay Center, KS). They enjoyed life happily and frequently went on trips together.  Though their time was not forever, it was a cherished part of Denise's life.

The 4th of July was Denise's favorite time of year and for numerous years she sold fireworks to the community for others to enjoy, as she did, during  the season. Just spending time outside was what Denise really wanted to do as many of her hobbies included the great outdoors. She reminisced on her trips to the dunes frequently.

She is preceded in death by her Mother and father, Forest and Wanda Howard, Brother, Phil Howard.

Survivors include her only child, Cori Coggin (Gunn) , son in law, Bryce Coggin of Kansas City, MO, and 2 grandchildren, Rylie Dawn Fuller and Guinevere Denise Coggin. Brothers, Brian Howard (Jeanette) of Edmond, OK, Rodney Howard (Barb) of Burr Oak, KS. Many of her close friends have grown into family and they will also remember her with love and fondness.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 9th 2026 at 11 a.m. at The Benton Church in Benton, Kansas. Located at 14300 SW 20th St, Benton, KS 67017.  Lunch to follow. Cremation took place with the Baker Funeral Home in Wichita, Kansas.
