Cecil Eugene "Gene" Walker Jr., 71, of Andover, Kansas, passed away on April 20, 2026.

Gene was born on July 15, 1954, in Brinkley, Arkansas, to Cecil E. Walker and Mary E. Walker (Standfast), who preceded him in death. He grew up alongside his siblings, Mary B. Walker of Wichita, Kansas; Gerald A. (Sue) Walker of Punta Gorda, Florida; and Leanna Davidson of Bel Aire, Kansas.

Gene proudly served his country in the United States Army in the early 1970s. He went on to build a life rooted in hard work, spending many years as a dedicated truck driver and painter. He was a man who valued independence, resilience, and showing up for others.

Later in life, after becoming disabled and using a wheelchair, Gene found a deeper purpose that would define his legacy. He became a passionate advocate for disability rights, working closely with ADAPT and traveling to Washington, D.C. more times than could be counted to advocate for accessibility and protections under the Americans with Disabilities Act. His voice, determination, and presence made a lasting impact on countless individuals and communities.

Gene also found joy in giving back in more personal ways. He served as a "Grandpa Mentor" to elementary students in Augusta, Kansas, offering guidance, encouragement, and kindness to the next generation. He loved spending time outdoors and was especially passionate about fishing, even helping bring the idea of Fishing Has No Boundaries to others so more people could experience it.

He is survived by his loving siblings, as well as many nieces and nephews who will remember him for his strength, humor, and unwavering spirit.

Gene stood for perseverance, dignity, and advocacy. His life was a testament to turning hardship into purpose, and he dedicated himself to making the world more accessible and inclusive for others.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
